WebP vs AVIF
Both beat JPEG. The choice comes down to how much CPU you're willing to spend and which browsers you target.
At a glance
- AVIF: 20–50% smaller than WebP at the same quality. Slower encode. Supported by Chrome, Firefox, Safari 16+.
- WebP: ~25–35% smaller than JPEG. Fast encode. Supported everywhere including older Safari.
Rule of thumb
Hero images and product photos → AVIF. Bulk thumbnails, user uploads, anything you re-encode often → WebP.
